You have a Parson Russell Terrier female with an official pedigree and would like to breed a litter with this female. There is a lot involved. The Parson Support Committee (POC) is available for advice to members of the PRTCN.

The PRTCN is a recognized breed association and affiliated with the umbrella body De Raad van Beheer op Kynologisch Gebied in Nederland (abbreviated: “De Raad”). Actually all countries have such an umbrella body and it is often called the Kennel Club. Most Kennel Clubs are part of the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale).

As a member of the PRTCN you are therefore subject to the regulations of the PRTCN, the Council and the FCI. De Raad is responsible for, among other things, chipping the puppies, collecting DNA material and issuing and registering pedigrees. The PRTCN is responsible for nest inspection and checks whether the parent animals and puppies comply with the Association Breeding Regulations (VFR).

What requirements do you, as a member of the PRTCN, have to meet as a breeder?
Remember that breeding a litter is not only a lot of fun, but also takes time and more or less money. Not to mention the things that can go wrong during mating, pregnancy, delivery, growing up and sale of the puppies. In addition, the VFR requires that your puppies grow up in a home environment. In summary, you should prepare for the following:
- Gain knowledge about the breed and breeding
- Apply for a UBN number
- Timely reporting of breeding and birth to the PRTCN and to the Board of Directors
- Comply with the regulations of the Board of Directors and the VFR
- If necessary, request a kennel name (not mandatory)

Gaining knowledge
It is wise to learn as much as possible about mating your dog, the preparation for this, care during pregnancy and delivery and caring for a litter. It is also good to delve into heredity, hereditary and other conditions, especially where your own breed is concerned. The PRTCN provides information about this through its club magazines and website. You can also contact the POC with questions.

You can find various courses, workshops and lectures about breeding online, via the RVB or via a Facebook group such as Breeders for Breeders. Your dog's breeder will often also point out the various options to you.

Apply for a UBN number:
First of all, you are obliged to apply for a UBN number, even if it concerns a one-off litter. You can request this number here:
https://www.rvo.nl/onderwerpen/identification-en-registration-dieren/honden

Without this number you cannot register your nest with de Raad. You will also need this number to have the puppies vaccinated by a veterinarian and for the issuance of passports.

Mating and birth declaration:
It is mandatory to report breeding and birth to both the PRTCN and the Raad van Beheer. Everything is done online:
- At the PRTCN via the web forms available under 'Breeder info'
- For de Raad van Beheer, create a free account at Mijn RvB: https://www.houdenvanhonden.nl/mijnrvb/

If your Parson Russell Terrier has a pedigree and meets all the conditions set by the RvB, and he or she mates with another Parson Russell that meets the same conditions, the puppies will almost always receive a pedigree.

Regulations of the Raad van Beheer and the PRTCN:
What are the conditions of the Raad van Beheer?
These are the rules of the Basic Welfare and Health Regulations (BWG); these apply to all purebred dogs. (Chapter VIII Breeding and Health Title 1 of the Cynological Regulations)
The current rules can be found here: https://www.houdenvanhonden.nl/fokken-met-je-hond/basisregulation-welzijn-en-gezondheid/

Association breeding regulations (VFR)
The PRTCN sets additional rules for breeding a litter. These are in our VFR. In addition to the standard articles from the BWG regulations of the Raad van Beheer, additional breeding, health, conformation and welfare rules are stated here.
The association breeding regulations can be found on our website under 'Breeder info' - 'Regulations'.

Pay particular attention to the health rules. The PRTCN requires the following health examinations: Patella Luxation, ECVO examination for eye diseases, LOA (late onset ataxia) DNA certified, SCA (spinocerebellar ataxia) DNA certified and PLL (primary lens luxation) DNA certified.

In addition, a dog that has a kinked tail and any dog that has incorrect teeth (including a serious over- or underbite) are not allowed to be bred.

In addition, the PRTCN also requires an exterior qualification. These can be obtained at a dog show. Dog shows are not “for show” or just for winning prizes for dog appearance.

They were once devised to show your dog to other breeders, etc. and you participate in them to assess whether your dog's appearance conforms to the image of what a Parson Russell should look like. For example, whether he or she has bad teeth, the coat is in order, etc.

Everything about the Parson Russell Terrier's appearance has a function. You would like to breed because you have a (healthy) dog that meets the image that people have of the breed. The desired appearance is described in the official international breed standard.
A judge can confirm this during an exhibition. Your dog gets an assessment and the best dog, in the eyes of the judge, gets the best assessment. But even a dog that is not the best can be good enough for breeding. The rules of the PRTCN are that the dog must achieve the following assessments, also called qualifications: at an official show: at least 2x "Very Good". Or you can take part in our Breeding Suitability Inspection to obtain at least the qualification “inspection approved”.

Kennel name (optional)
If your puppies receive a pedigree, you can give them an official name that may consist of a maximum of 30 letters. However, this name may only consist of 1 word. In addition to a name, they also receive a pedigree number and chip number.
If you have a kennel name, this kennel name will appear before or after the puppy's own name. Even then, the whole may consist of a maximum of 40 letters/characters. So if the name of your kennel is “van de Laarhof” (11 letters and 2 spaces), you still have 27 characters left to come up with one or more nice names for the puppies. Applying for a kennel name costs money and there are rules and requirements associated with it. This information can be found on the Council's website; www.houdenvanhonden.nl
How do I choose a male for my female?
Dogs, both males and females, that meet the requirements of the PRTCN can be found on the website under breeder information, stud dogs. Of course, in addition to these males, there are many other males in the world, which can also be used if they comply with the VFR. In consultation with the male owner, you decide whether the dogs will complement or improve each other if you pair them together.
It is wise to make agreements about the price for coverage and what the arrangement is if no nest results from coverage that has already been paid.
We advise you to use our sample purchase agreement on our website when selling your puppies. You will find this under breeders info – downloads. You and your buyers have legal rights and obligations. Be well informed about this.
As a breeder, you must always keep yourself informed about changes in regulations. This can be done via the RV, or the RVB website and newsletter. PLEASE NOTE: It is important to know that this is your own responsibility.
This summarizes in a nutshell how the 'technical side' of breeding a litter works. There is so much more to know and learn about it. We hope that you will thoroughly understand everything involved in using your bitch to breed a litter. We also hope that your dog's breeder will assist you with everything related to this.
You are not obliged to be a member of the PRTCN if you want to breed, but you will receive a discount on the pedigrees of the puppies, and you can announce your puppies via the puppy info and you can call or email us for information and advice. You will also receive our beautiful club magazine with information, you can participate in activities, and you can participate in discussions during the General Members' Meeting and during the breeder consultation. You can also contact us for further information. You can register as a member at www.prtcn.nl, as a breeder you can register separately and you will receive a membership card especially for breeders that must be shown to the chipper of the Board of Directors.

Would you like to read the procedure again from beginning to end? It is written out very nicely on the board of directors, including a handy checklist.
